World innovation: Caya® contoured diaphragm
Safe and hormone-free contraception!
Mörfelden-Walldorf, 20 June 2013. Many women simply do not tolerate “the pill” or have experienced severe difficulties when using a coil. Most women prefer a form of contraception that doesn’t involve synthetic hormones. With the Caya® contoured diaphragm, a new option is available immediately for women who prefer natural and safe contraception. And it’s easy to use - just as easy as a tampon! No adaptation necessary. The Caya® diaphragm fits most women. Caya® diaphragms is recommended always to use together with the contraceptive Caya® Gel. Safety, ease of use and compliance at use has been proved in clinical, independent studies in the USA. The diaphragm is manufactured and sold (pharmacy or on the internet) in Germany.
The unique feature of Caya® contoured diaphragm is its anatomical and ergonomic shape. This innovative design and the materials used were developed together with users in an intensive research process* in six medical studies. The result is a novel, safe barrier contraceptive which is now finally on the market.
It is easy to use: the Caya® diaphragm is introduced into the vagina like a tampon before sex. After intercourse, it remains in the vagina for at least six hours. It is then removed and washed and can be re-used repeatedly for up to two years. It is kept in an attractively designed case.
Caya® consists of a flexible ring (nylon) and an extremely thin silicone membrane. It covers the cervix completely and thereby prevents sperms from penetrating into the uterus. The contraceptive effect is supported by the contraceptive gel applied onto the inside of the membrane and the rim before insertion. When used in this way, Caya® is just as safe as a condom.
Threefold safety through the combination of Caya® with a contraceptive gel:
- The silicone membrane is the mechanical barrier directly in front of the cervix. The firm rim of the diaphragm securely seals off the cervix.
- Caya® contraceptive gel also contains cellulose which creates another mechanical barrier directly at the cervix.
- The acidic pH of the contraceptive gel of 3.8 inhibits the sperms.
Counselling by the gynecologist
Caya® is available without a prescription from pharmacies or online shops. Women who are not familiar with their body and have questions about how to use Caya® will find a competent adviser in their gynaecologist. Women diagnosed with pelvic floor or uterine descent should discuss with their doctor whether they can use the new contraceptive method. Caya® must not be used during the first six weeks after childbirth. Women who have previously used a small (60 mm) larger (85 mm or more) diaphragm cannot use the Caya® diaphragm.
