Press release 02/2013
Caya® contoured diaphragm – easy, safe and hormone-free contraception
Contraception that fits
Mörfelden-Walldorf, 20 July 2013. For women, safety, ease of use and the fewest possible side effects are important criteria when choosing a contraceptive1. With the Caya® contoured diaphragm, a contraceptive for women is now available which is convenient to use and offers safety comparable to that of a condom. This innovative diaphragm is available in one size that fits most women, offering a pure barrier method that does not interfere with the hormone metabolism and is free of side effects. For reliable contraception, it is recommended to use the diaphragm together with a contraceptive gel, such as Caya® Gel2.
Thanks to reliable methods of contraception, it is now possible for responsible men and women to enjoy their sexuality without risking pregnancy. The chosen method must suit the woman in question, however: some women are unable to use hormonal contraceptives for health reasons or reject them for personal reasons. A coil is not always the answer. Comprehensive advice from a gynaecologist and recommendations for a contraceptive method that best meets a woman's preference is therefore of great importance when making the right choice.
The typical user
The Caya® contoured diaphragm is a reliable contraceptive for all women who prefer hormone-free methods, as well as for women who have given birth, are breast feeding or between pregnancies.
Roughly 60 percent of women who prefer a natural approach to family planning, such as the symptothermal method, tend to use barrier methods such as the condom or diaphragm during fertile phases. The Caya® diaphragm now offers women a further option, particularly if they are allergic to latex.
Easy to use and no prescription needed
The new Caya® diaphragm is available without prescription from pharmacies* and is as simple to use as a tampon: 80 percent of users in one study successfully positioned the diaphragm at the first attempt simply by following the instructions for use3. After assistance from a doctor, 98 percent of women positioned the contraceptive correctly.
Unlike conventional diaphragms, the size of the Caya® contoured diaphragm does not need to be adapted. Extensive studies have demonstrated that one size suits almost every woman4.
Users should be familiar with their own anatomy to ensure safe application. A gynaecological consultation can be useful for this purpose, as well as for identifying possible contraindications. Caya® cannot be used by women with severe pelvic floor or uterine descent. This method is also unsuitable for women with a small or absent retropubic recess. Further contraindications are acute or frequent bladder infections. Caya® also may not be used during the first six weeks after childbirth. Women who have previously used a small (60 mm) or larger (85 mm or more) diaphragm cannot use this new contraceptive method.
Detailed information on the Caya® contoured diaphragm is available on the internet at www.caya.eu.
